Whoever thought the 2006 Asia Pacific Laser Championship was going to be hot and windless would think otherwise after today. Prayers for stronger winds were answered, the storms arrived in mid-afternoon and brought forth winds up to 20 over knots, not commonly seen in Singapore. The capsize carnival could well dispel the myths of light wind sailing in Singapore.
Olympic Bronze medalist Michael Blackburn won two out of three races today, topping the podium with six points. Close behind him in second place is 25 year old Joshua Chant from Australia who thinks he might still stand a good chance of winning. “The Race Officers did a good job running three races today in those difficult circumstances. The racing was great, more exciting than I expected. Michael didn’t do too well in the last race, I could still catch up in the next few days of racing.”
In the Laser Radial division, Malaysian Mohd Romzi is sailing consistently to stay at first place. Siblings Lo Jun Hao and Lo Man Yi follows in second and third positions.
Some countries, including Singapore, are making use of their results in the 2006 Asia Pacific Laser Championship to qualify to compete in the Laser World Championship taking place in Korea this September.
